Certainty - Business Sales

Do I need a broker to sell my business?

No, you can sell a business privately in Australia. Whether you should is a different question, and it usually comes down to what your time is worth and whether you know how to run a competitive sale process without underselling the business or exposing confidential information to the wrong people.

A licensed broker does three things most owners can't easily do themselves at the same time: prepare the business properly (accurate numbers, a market estimate that stands up to buyer scrutiny, a clean information pack), run a confidential process that finds genuine buyers without alerting your staff, competitors or clients that the business is for sale, and negotiate from a position that isn't emotionally attached to the outcome, which matters more than most owners expect once an offer actually lands.

Selling privately can work for a straightforward, low-value business with a buyer already in mind, a family member, a key staff member, someone who's already approached you. It gets much harder once you need to find a buyer from scratch, want the sale kept confidential while you keep running the business, or want a second, informed opinion on whether an offer is fair before you accept it. That last point is where most private sales quietly lose money, an owner accepts the first reasonable-sounding offer because they have nothing to compare it against, which is exactly where proper preparation for business sales makes the real difference, whether or not a broker ends up running the process.

Do I need a broker to sell my business?

No, private sales are legal and possible, particularly with an existing buyer in mind. A licensed broker adds value through proper preparation, a confidential buyer search, and negotiation from an informed, unemotional position, which matters most when there's no existing buyer and no independent way to judge whether an offer is fair.
